When you plan your vacation in Nepal you should definitly concider going for a trek. Nepal is arguably one of the worlds most scenic countries and by leaving the dusty trafficked roads you get a great opportunity to see the traditional, rural Nepal which has turned world famous for it’s genuinity and beauty.
In Nepal there are endless amounts of treks to choose from and you should ponder for a while about what you are looking for. Here’s a small check list:
- Time? There are treks that take only a few days and there are treks that leave you months on the trail.
- Difficulty level? Choose between light, moderate or extremely tough treks. Or anything in between!
- Area and hotel standard? Do you prefer the more remote areas where you meet few or no other tourists but where the sleeping standard will be camping or extremely basic family home stays, or would you like a trek more frequently trafficked by other trekkers but where you can get a room in a comparatively nice guesthouse and continental food?
- Your interests and your purpose of the trek? In Nepal there are treks that are gems for anyone with a cultural interest, so called heritage trails or cultural treks. They are usually on a pretty low altitude passing through many traditional villages. There are also the mountain view treks that are more focused on the natural beauty of the country and often on a higher altitude passing through fewer settlements.
Did you make a plan? Good! Let’s proceed to next step.
When you search for a company to trek with there are some things you should be aware of, and that you should check in advance before booking.
- What is included in your package deal? The cheaper the better is not always true here. Compare your needs with the facilities provided. You don’t want to get exhausted during the trek due to less facilities provided by the agency.
- How are the saftey standards of the agency? Do they take precautions before the trek? There have been cases where the agency has been selling overly difficult tours only to be able to cash in the money from an insurance company for the heli ride down.
- Who will be your guide? Can you have a chat with her/him and is s/he licenced?
- How are the conditions for the staff? You want your staff to be as safe and happy as you are to go trekking. That will only happen if their conditions are good. Make sure they are insured, have proper daily wage and good equipment such as jacket and shoes.
- What is the agency doing to reduce the environmental impact of the trek? The Nepalese nature is under great treat. It is important to make the tourism in the country sustainable
